01Chemical Diversity : Balaram P

02Diverse Processes in Ecology mediated by Chemistry : Shannon Olsson

  • How to identify a chemical reaction?
  • Kairomone, synomone etc definitions
  • How does interactions affect organisms? – Steps in signaling processes using moth pheromone biosynthesis as classic example.
  • What are the molecular players? - concept of odor objects and the complicated chemical ecology of tube- nosed seabirds

03Navigation towards chemical sources: Insects as case study : Sanjay Sane

  • What is behaviour?
  • How is it measured?
  • How is it analysed?

04Evolution of chemical diversity : Renee Borges

  • This lecture will examine the evolutionary processes that can be responsible for the generation, maintenance and evolution of chemical diversity in the kingdoms of life, especially for those chemicals that have information content, and also those that could have positive or negative impacts on inter- and intraspecies interactions. Evolutionary processes such as mutation, hybridisation, diverse forms of selection, and combinatorial effects can influence chemical diversity and chemical function. Convergence of functionality will also be addressed.

05Species Diversification patterns and processes in Indian subcontinent : Kartik Shanker

  • Brief history of evolution and biogeography
  • Species concepts: what if anything is a species
  • Measuring diversity: species richness, diversity and abundance
  • Macroecological patterns of diversity: Why are there more species in the tropics?
  • Macroevolutionary patterns of diversification: Why are some clades richer? What generates the heat in the biodiversity hotspots?
  • Historical biogeography of the Indian subcontinent
